Post English Vinglish

I am just back from watching the movie that I had planned to watch with my husband 2 weeks ago. I was eagerly waiting to watch this one with my husband, cause my good friend Naznin had told me that this movie is a must watch, especially to be seen along with a husband.

Though I knew the central theme of the movie was antagonist to my own life, but still I wanted to watch this one to thank my stars for not being in the difficult situation in which most of the women, especially Indian or the Asian women are, and yes, I am not being judgmental here, just quoting out from the statistics that we all know.

I have seen many women stuck in the similar situation as the character of Sridevi was in the movie. That constant need to be appreciated, the need to feel accepted, if not considered important, that most of the house wives feel was so realistically depicted in the movie.

I do not know why a married woman in my country is subjected to such nonsensical rules and regulations. Like a married woman is not supposed to have any friends, no feelings for herself, she cannot be thinking for herself, if she does, she is bound to be selfish, a married woman's soul aim for living should be for the well-being of her family, that only includes her husband and kids, and the family of her husband. Happiness of her family is only what she should seek for in life, and it is imbibed in her that anything that seems like a personal happiness of her own may only be a disaster disguised as a short-term happiness to fool her as a mirage. That includes having friends too can be injurious for her, and the term friends strictly includes people of feminine gender only.

Moreover, anything pleasurable that she does for herself can have an iota of damage causing possibility to her family and later, that could boomerang as a guilt towards her. And if not her family, and the society, that little guilt would pull her life apart. My goodness, as if the moment a woman is married, she turns asexual, and inhuman rather. Or, should I say a robot, who is just programmed to respond to the needs and comforts of her family members. And those needs and comforts could range from anything as big as organizing and managing family functions like weddings, or as small as preparing the daily meals on time, attending the rituals of waking up the husband and kids everyday, preparing their breakfast, ensuring that they eat it, see them off for their work and schools respectively; and just everything that they would need her for. Frankly and technically speaking those needs if had been taken over by some professional, they would come under the work profile of a care-taker or a maid/help or probably a robot.

I am not against a woman caring or attending to her family, that consists of her loved ones that includes her husband and kids, and also her husband's family; but the entire family being dependent on her for the stuff that they can very well do all by themselves is something I am not for. I mean is it so much of a deal for a man/woman or a kid to wake up by themselves, prepare their own tea, break eggs in a saucepan and have it with tea/coffee???

Man heavens would not fall off if a man would do a little house-hold work, I mean that is not even work, it is just the basic mannerisms of being yourself. Waking up all by yourself or an alarm from your cellphone, preparing your own food cannot take away a machismo from a man, well provided the man had it in him if at all at the first place.

I do not know, the whole theory of making your own woman feel downtrodden has to do with the conspiracy of making your opponent feel helpless. In simple terms, we call it the tactics of dealing with your own inferiority complex by being defensive. This becomes more of a needed survival tactics because if your woman had been smarter, she would leave you for someone else better than you, and then you will not be able to wake up by yourself, will not receive bed-tea and will also have to provide nanny services to your kids, apart from earning a living to support them and yourself. So the solution to all lies in weakening your wife by being defensive, and you achieve it by means of being judgmental towards her, mocking her in front of everyone, and also in private; not being appreciative of her, irrespective of whatever good she does, giving her the cold shoulder treatment anytime and every time, being inquisitive of any kind of activity that she might be considering as a personal development for herself, scorning her in front of her friends and your own friends, as well as common friends of you both.

I could go on and on with the little stupid things most of the men do to make their wives a life-long bonded labor for themselves. But coming back to the movie, it was brilliant, simple and very realistic. It had that essence of truth in it, that made me connect with it. But of course it was the Sridevi who stole the entire attention in the movie. Man what grace and what a body structure the woman has maintained, it was simply awesome and it is mind blowing to come to terms with the fact that she is almost 50 years old in real life.

I am happy that she did not retort to the usual song and dance and item number route that most of her contemporaries have taken in order to ensure that the arc lights follow them. Plus, who really cannot readily show their body parts today..in fact it is unheard of being covered in a traditional cotton sari worn covering the navel along with a tangible blouse, and not those bra-cum-blouses (you know what I mean); and along with that act and look graceful and elegantly sexy, managing all well at the same time. Well, it is a feat that only the Sridevi can achieve.

And I admit that I do not recall anyone else from the movie, except for the funny Pakistani lad; an encouraging and enthusiastic English teacher and a French hunk who was a cook too....Such is the magic of the leading lady in the movie.

Well, well when you are born in Sivakasi and you are Sridevi, you are bound to be a sizzling bombshell and a goddess; and this achieved with almost no efforts from her end.

Ahh I am so J.  :(
